Bleak Theology A post-punk counterweight to joy.

“Bombs of Beirut” by Mary Kouyoumdjian

&

I discovered Mary Kouyoumdjian and her work while listening to Q2, the contemporary classical music station counterpart of WQXR here in NYC. This is the Kronos Quartet performing it live.

This is the kind of music that must continue to be created, regardless of its “accessibility,” because this music creates the kind of access required. This is the music of lamentation and autobiography. And it must be told to and listened by those who have no encounter with such sadness. I have not experienced direct war. By I can mourn along with those who have.
